So you’ve decided to advance your education and attend graduate school. Now what?

Applying to graduate school is a big decision.  There are a number of resources available on the internet and through Career Services at VT to assist you with this decision. First and foremost, you should talk to faculty members in the program area that you are most interested in studying. They will be able to provide you with some basic knowledge about the field and possibly contacts at other institutions with reputable programs that meet your particular interests.

Admission for graduate study in CEE at Virginia Tech is granted by the Graduate School upon recommendation of the CEE Department through a faculty review committee. Admitted students normally have a bachelors degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program, although that is not a requirement. Those without an engineering background, must complete background courses or show proficiency by prior coursework at the undergraduate level in certain fundamental areas such as math, science, engineering science and civil engineering. All CEE graduate students, regardless of their academic background, are expected to have proper prerequisite coursework to be successful in their graduate studies at Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech Graduate School

If you are considering Virginia Tech as an option for pursuing your graduate work, you may want to consider learning more about the Accelerated Undergraduate/Graduate Program to see if you qualify.  Information sessions are typically held each spring semester to provide an overview of this program. Messages will be distributed through the CEE Undergraduate Scholar Site.

The Accelerated UG/G program will allow you to ‘double count’ two of your Advanced Technical Electives from your BSCE degree towards your MS degree. It is important to PLAN for this, because courses in the structures specialty area will not be applicable for double counting if you are planning for a master’s degree in transportation!
