Alumnus Sanjeev Malushte honored by ASCE

Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering alumnus Dr. Sanjeev R. Malushte was selected by the Energy Division to receive the 2018 Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr. Energy Award. He was selected for “significant contributions to practice, education, research, and codification activities for seismic and structural design of nuclear and industrial structures.”

Malushte received his M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, with a focus on structural engineering, from Virginia Tech. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech. He has over 30 years of varied experience as a practicing civil design engineer, engineering supervisor, resident engineer, project engineer, and adjunct faculty member. He has worked with Bechtel Corporation for over 28 years serving on many US and international nuclear, fossil, and renewable power project in various roles and during all project phases. He is an active member of many seismic and structural standards committees and has served on the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Policy Committee for Energy, Environment, and Water Issues. He has over 70 journal and conference papers, research reports, and invited seminars in the fields of structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, structural codes/standards, and modular steel-plate composite construction.

He was also recognized as one of the youngest Bechtel Fellows in 2005, which is the highest technical recognition at Bechtel. In addition, he is a Fellow of ASCE and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
